Biochem/physiol Actions
Desmosterol is a liver X receptor (LXR) agonist and it regulates inflammatory signaling in macrophages. Desmosterol accumulates during impairment of 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase enzyme thereby leading to desmosterolosis. It is a potential therapeutic target for treating the neurodegenerative disorder.
General description
Desmosterol is a precursor of cholesterol synthesis and the enzyme 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase catalyzes this step. It lacks a double bond between C24 and C25, which is present in cholesterol. Desmosterol is the major brain sterol and is localized in spermatozoa membrane and astrocytes. Desmosterol (D6) ester is a deuterated desmosterol with octadecanoic acid.
