Cholestenoic acid is a carboxylic acid γ-secretase modulator. Cholestenoic acid also serves as a ligand for liver X receptor. Cholestenoic acid -d5 regulates amyloid β peptides (Aβ) levels. It reduces Aβ42 levels and enhances Aβ38 levels. In retina, it is the major byproduct of cholesterol elimination. 27-hydroxycholesterol and cholestenoic acid are part of reverse cholesterol transport in macrophages and their transport impairment is implicated in premature atherosclerosis.
Cholestenoic acid-d5 functions as a potent steroid γ-secretase modulator (GSM).
General description
Cholestenoic acid-d5 is an endogenous cholesterol metabolite. It is produced in extrahepatic organs.
Cholestenoic acid levels in plasma ranges between 100-300 nM and is synthesized in brain. Cholestenoic acid is generated by the side chain oxidation of 27-hydroxy-cholesterol and is an intermediate in the bile synthesis pathway.
