Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an aprotic solvent. Therapeutic and toxic molecules that are not soluble in water are often soluble in DMSO. Liquid nitrogen used in conjunction with a cryoprotective agent such as DMSO is a widely used method for preserving cells. DMSO is used to prepare stock solutions of various molecules and is also used as a control for these molecules. It has been used in cell migration assay for dissolving post-migration cells. BPC-tested DMSO also meets the requirements of biotechnology and tissue engineering applications. Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used as a vehicle control to culture and induce hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation in vivo. It has also been used to prepare a stock solution to study the cytotoxicity of ferulic acid (FA) on nucleus pulposus (NP) cells.
