General description

The role of white adipose tissue was once thought to be limited to energy storage and internal organ protection. The discovery of Leptin secretion from Adipocytes in 1994 led to the recognition that white adipose tissue is involved in a variety of metabolic and physiological processes. Adipocytes secrete several hormones called Adipokines with functions that include appetite and energy balance, insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism. The Adipokine Adiponectin is involved in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism, influencing the body’;s response to insulin. Adiponectin also has anti-inflammatory effects on the cellular lining of blood vessel walls which may help explain the association of high levels with reduced risk of heart attack. The MILLIPLEX® Human Adipokine Panel 1 is a 5-plex kit to be used for the simultaneous quantification of any or all of the following analytes in serum or plasma samples: Adiponectin, Adipsin, Lipocalin-2/NGAL, Total PAI-1, and Resistin. This kit uses a 96-well format, contains a lyophilized standard cocktail, two internal assay quality controls and can measure up to 38 samples in duplicate. The Luminex® xMAP® platform uses a magnetic bead immunoassay format for ideal speed and sensitivity to quantitate multiple analytes simultaneously, dramatically improving productivity while conserving valuable sample volume.
