General description
The sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 3 (SLC38A3) protein is a sodium-dependent amino acid/proton exchanger (also called an antiporter or counter transporter) SLC38A3 mediates the electrogenic cotransport of glutamine and sodium ions in exchange for protons. SLC38A3 can also transport the amino acids histidine, asparagine and alanine in place of protons. Some evidence exists that SLC38A3 may mediate amino acid transport in either direction under particular physiological conditions such as homeostatic stress like that seen in acidosis, and SLC38A3 plays a role in nitrogen metabolism and synaptic transmission by regulating the levels of sodium and the stimulatory amino acid glutamine. SLC38A3 is localized to the cell membrane and is widely expressed in many tissues, including heart, liver, brain, and prostate.
