General description
ALKBH1 is a DNA lyase that is critical for DNA repair and specifically repairs alkylated single-stranded DNA and RNA containing 3-methylcytosine by oxidative demethylation. ALKBH1 can also cleave both single-stranded and double-stranded DNA at basic sites, and ALKBH1 can induce double stranded breaks at basic sites. Finally, ALKBH1 plays a role in placental trophoblast lineage differentiation during development, and ALKBH1 may also play a role in neuronal development and migration. ALKBH1 is widely expressed and localizes to mitochondria and nucleus. The nuclear localization of ALKBH1 appears to be as part of fusion proteins with nuclear targeted proteins or when the first 26 N-terminal residues are removed.
