Application
14:0 Cardiolipin (ammonium salt) has been used as stable isotope-labeled standard prior to yeast strains high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS). It may be used as an internal standard in mass spectroscopy and in liposome preparation for electrophysiological studies.
14:0 Cardiolipin (ammonium salt) may be used in lipopeptide synthesis.
Biochem/physiol Actions
TMCL (1,1′,2,2′-tetramyristoyl cardiolipin) bilayers are useful in generating multilamellar vesicles. Defects in the cardiolipin metabolic associated with Barth syndrome patients. Liposomes of TMCL with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) and cholesterol are potential drug-delivery systems. TMCL displays temperature dependent thermotropic phase transitions.
Cardiolipin participates in proton uptake pathway and also maintains the structure of enzymes involved. Cardiolipin maintains the mitochondrial function, membrane potential and structural support for the inner mitochondrial membrane and proteins in it. Concentration and composition changes of cardiolipin have been implicated in pathological conditions including ischemia, hypothyroidism, aging, heart failure and cardioskeletal myopathy.) Cardiolipin can form micelles/vesicles naturally.
General description
14:0 Cardiolipin or TMCL (1,1′,2,2′-tetramyristoyl cardiolipin) is a saturated CL and exists as gel at low temperatures.
Cardiolipin is an anionic phospholipid. The 14:0 indicates the fatty acyl substituents attached to the carbons of glycerol. It is localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane.
