Biochem/physiol Actions
Cholestenoic acid (CA) is a ligand to nuclear receptor. Based on the structural features, CA may elicit neurotoxic or neuroprotective effects. Defects in the enzymes catalyzing the formation of cholestenoic acids are implicated in disorders related to motor neuron degeneration.
General description
3β,24S-dihydroxy-5-cholestenoic acid is a cholestenoic acid (CA). The enzyme sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1) catalyzes the synthesis of CA in the mitochondria.
