Application
Sitostanol may be used in the preparation of binary phospholipid for thermodynamic studies and Brewster angle microscopy studies. It may also be used as a standard steroid in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).
Sitostanol is suitable for its use as a component in micelle preparation, used for cell culture and cellular uptake studies. It is also suitable for use in cell culture to study its effect on a T-helper-1 shift in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from asthma patients.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sitostanol lowers the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and serum cholesterol.
Plant stanols are structurally similar to cholesterol, hence it reduces the plasma level of LDL cholesterol. Sitostanol is known to possess hypolipidemic and antiatherogenic effects.
Sitostanol decreases cholesterol absorption. Its ratio with cholesterol is implicated in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The ratio also correlates with liver steatosis and inflammation. Sitostanol induces interferon γ production and T-helper response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in asthma patients. It is a hypocholestremic agent as it decreases the micellar solubility and absorption of cholesterol.
General description
Sitostanol is a plant stanol and a hydrogenated form of sitosterol.
Sitostanol is a 5α-saturated sitosterol derivative.
It is predominantly present in pine oil.
