Biochem/physiol Actions

Fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9) is required for lung, heart, inner ear, digestive system and testes development. FGF9 is one of the sex determination genes, expressed in the same pattern in both XX and XY gonads at an early stage, and at later stage, restricted to XY gonads as the testis differentiation proceeds. Fgf9 is essential for mesenchyme proliferation for the lung development and airway branching. Fgf9 along with its receptor Fgfr3 plays a major role in normal skeletal and joint development. Missense mutations in FGF9 leads to multiple synostoses syndrome, characterized by joint fusions, facies and might develop deafness due to fusion of ossicles.

General description

Fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9) also known as Glia-activating factor (GAF) and Heparin-binding growth factor 9 (HBGF-9) belongs to FGF super family. FGF9 was initially purified as a heparin-binding glycoprotein from cultured human glioma cells. FGF9 is widely expressed in epithelial-like and neuronal tissues during embryonic development. In human chromosome, the gene FGF9 is localized on 13q12.11.
