General description
CD71 is a 190 kDa disulfide-bonded homodimeric type II transmembrane glycoprotein. CD71 is the receptor for transferrin. CD71 is involved in iron (Fe3+) uptake, and expression is regulated by the metabolic demand for iron, which is essential for the growing cell (Goding, 2002). CD71 is more abundantly expressed in rapidly dividing cells than quiescent cells (Newman, 1982; Sutherland, 1981). In normal tissues, high expression of CD71 is seen in the placental trophoblast and hemoglobin-synthesizing reticulocytes (Newman, 1982) but expression is lost in mature erythrocytes (Sutherland, 1981). Anti-CD71, Ber-79, was included in the Fifth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD71 (Boeker, 1995).
