General description
Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 1 (SATB1) contains 2 CUT DNA-binding domains and one homeobox DNA binding domain belonging to the CUT homeobox family. SATB1 contributes to the initiation of X inactivation mediated by Xist RNA that occurs during embryogenesis and in lymphoma. SATB1 is organized into a cage-like network anchoring loops of heterochromatin and regulates gene expression through chromatin remodeling/HDAC (histone deacetylase complex), and transcription factors recruitment. SATB1 is predominantly expressed in thymus. Recent studies show that SATB1 is necessary for breast cancer cells to become metastatic.
