β-Galactosyl ceramide (β-GalCer) regulates the activity of β-glucocerebrosidase. It also plays a role as cell surface receptors for bacterial and viral toxins.
General description
β-Galactosyl ceramide (β-GalCer) is a simple glycosphingolipid. It is made up of lipophilic sphingosine & hydrophilic galactose attached to sphingosine via ether linkage. Β-GalCer is present in the myelin sheath of the central and peripheral nervous system. It has five analogs including 6a-6e.
