Application
18:2 PE has been used for the preparation of liposomes.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) functions as to provide rigidity to the cell membranes via hexagonal phase structures which promote tight packing of the membrane bilayer formed by phosphatidylcholine. It is also involved in the conversion of prions from the non-toxic to toxic conformation. PE also initiates the autophagosome formation by attaching covalently to the autophagy Atg8 protein.
General description
Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is the second most plenteous glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic cells. It is a non-bilayer forming phospholipid, which is found majorly in the mitochondria. It consists of a small polar head group with fatty acid chains.
