Application
Heart CA has been used in the Mycobacterium lipid extraction and in β- Hexosaminidase release and calcium mobilization assays. It maybe used for liposome synthesis. It may also be used as a lipid standard for the in situ analysis and characterization of cardiolipins.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Cardiolipin is involved in maintaining the structure and function of the mitochondria. It also serves as a co-factor for stimulating mitochondrial enzymes and mediates mitochondrial apoptosis. Cardiolipin is associated with the oxidative phosphorylation system for the adenine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Deficiency of cardiolipin is associated with variation of mitochondrial membrane structure and function. It is also associated with Barth syndrome.
General description
Cardiolipin is a phospholipid found in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. It is synthesized from phosphatidylglycerol and cytidinediphosphate-diacylglycerol. It consists of two phosphatidyl residues, which are linked by a glycerol group.
