Application
C12-NBD-sphingomyelin has been used as a substrate to test substrate specificity of neutral ceramidase orthologue encoded by AsahA gene.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sphingomyelin (SM) is produced from phosphatidylcholine and ceramide on the cell surface and in lumen of the Golgi. SM′s high packing density and affinity to sterols form a rigid barrier to the extracellular environment. SM is also involved in the formation of lipid rafts in cell membranes, which perform important functions in signal transduction and membrane trafficking.
General description
C12-NBD Sphingomyelin is a fluorescent analog of biologically active molecule, sphingomyelin. Sphingomyelin is predominantly found in the animal plasma membrane. It is abundantly present as component of cell membranes in mammals, nematodes, protozoa.
