Application
Sodium chlorate may be used as an oxidizing agent to abstract zinc from sphalerite.
Biochem/physiol Actions
sulfation biosynthesis inhibitor
General description
Sodium chlorate is a hygroscopic, achiral ionic compound which on crystallization forms two enantiomeric chiral crystals. It is reported to be a probable byproduct of the drinking water disinfectant, chlorine dioxide (ClO2). d-sodium chlorate may be utilized as chiral initiators in the synthesis of (S)-5-pyrimidyl alkanols. Commercial production of sodium chlorate is by anodic oxidation of NaCl. It finds application as herbicide, oxidizing agent and as a starting material in the synthesis of sodium perchlorate.
