Biochem/physiol Actions
Cholesterol esterase exhibits broad substrate specificity and regulates the bile salt-mediated hydrolysis of dietary cholesteryl esters. It participates in the hydrolysis of triglycerides and phospholipids which are essential for normal cholesterol absorption. Cholesterol esterase plays a key role in transporting free cholesterol to enterocytes. Loss of enzyme function reduces the intestinal absorption of dietary cholesteryl esters.
For the hydrolysis of cholesterol esters in the determination of total cholesterol in serum or plasma; Application in (selective) hydrolysis/condensation of carboxylic ester bonds
