General description
SRp30a, also known as SF2, ASF-1 (alternative splicing factor 1), is a member of the highly conserved family of SR proteins, a group of serine/arginine-rich domain-containing proteins that play a critical role in regulated and constitutive splicing of precursor mRNA. The SR family of proteins is characterized as having one to two RNA recognition motifs located in the n-terminal sequence, and an RS domain within the C-terminus that is rich in serine/arginine dipeptide repeats. ASF-1 has an inhibitory role in exon skipping, in order to maintain splicing accuracy and to monitor alternative splicing. Studies have shown that ASF-1 plays a role in the regulation of caspase-9 alternative splicing as well as being a critical component for ceramide to function as a mediator of alternative splicing for the same caspase.
