Formed by the action of CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase. Humans are devoid of this compound due to a mutation in the human CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase gene that occurred after the Homo-Pan divergence.

Formed by the action of CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase. A major component in great ape tissues except brain; however, it is absent in man due to a mutation in the human CMP-Neu5Ac hydroxylase gene that is reported to have occurred after the Homo-Pan divergence.
