Application
Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) might be used to study its ability to form silver adducts. It is also suitable for use in chemotaxis assays.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Prostaglandins (PGs) mediate vasodilation and vasoconstriction, the E-series of prostaglandin is a highly effective vasodilator. It is known to efficiently cause erythema. PGE1 is considered as a potent pyretic factor, and acts through cerebral ventricles. It is useful to prolong cardiovascular function in newborn suffering from ductus-dependant congenital heart disease until surgery. It acts as a vasodilator. PGE1 shows Ca2+ transients in sperm as induced by progesterone.
General description
Prostaglandins (PGs) belong to the group of biological compounds called eicosanoids, which are oxygen derivatives formed during arachidonic acid metabolism. PGs are localized to every tissue and body fluids in the mammals. It was first discovered in the human prostate gland, and hence got its name, prostaglandins.
