General description

Resistin (UniProt: Q9HD89; also known as Adipose tissue-specific secretory factor, ADSF,C/EBP-epsilon-regulated myeloid-specific secreted cysteine-rich protein, Cysteine-rich secreted protein A12-alpha-like 2, Cysteine-rich secreted protein FIZZ3) is encoded by the RETN (also known as FIZZ3, HXCP1, RSTN) gene (Gene ID: 56729) in rat. Resistin is a dilsulfide-linked homodimeric hormone secreted by the white adipose tissue. It is widely expressed, with strong expression in lung, bone marrow, and breast tissue. Resistin (resistance to insulin) was originally named for its ability to resist or interfere with the action of insulin. It has been linked to the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rheumatic disease, malignancy, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic kidney disease. It suppresses the ability of insulin to stimulate glucose uptake into adipose cells and is a key molecule linking obesity to diabetes. Circulating resistin levels are shown to be elevated in diet-induced and genetic forms of obesity and administration of anti-resistin antibody is shown to improve blood glucose levels and insulin action in mice with diet-induced obesity. Two isoforms of resistin have been described that are generated by alternative splicing. (Ref.: Jamaluddin MS et al (2012). Br J Pharmacol. 165(3); 622-632; Steppan, CM et al. (2001).
