General description

The cilium is a cell surface projection found in many vertebrate cells and it is required to transduce signals important for development and tissue homeostasis. OFD1 is important in cilium development, and thus it is important in cellular development and signaling. OFD1 is a component of the centrioles and appears to control the length of the centrioles in mother-daughter cells. OFD1 also plays an important role in the WNT signaling pathway and in the formation of the left-right axis in embryos. OFD1 is expressed in the cytoplasm during development in most tissues but can be found in the nucleus as well, and it is known to interact with proteins important in chromatin remodeling as well. At least one X-linked genetic mutation is associated with defects in the OFD1 gene. It is a form of oroffaciodigital syndrome characterized by abnormalities in the oral cavity, face, digits and other disfigurements that is lethal in males.
