General description
CHD-8 is a DNA helicase that acts as a chromatin remodeling factor as well as a transcriptional regulator. CHD-8 acts as a transcription repressor by remodeling chromatin structure and recruiting histone H1 to various genes such as p53. CHD-8 regulates beta catenin activity by suppressing the promoter activity of several beta catenin targeted genes. CHD-8 also suppresses STAT3 transcriptional activation in a similar fashion. CHD-8 is a component of multiple chromatin complexes and localizes to the nucleus and active chromatin. Interestingly mutations in CHD-8 are associated with a form of autism, Autism 18 as well as some forms of developmental delay and cognitive impairment, demonstrating CHD-8's potential importance in developmental brain function, and behavior.
